Eater Of Flesh

There are two things that are common taboo among most civilized societies - incest is one; cannibalism is the other. The thought of eating the flesh of other sentient beings (especially those of your own race) is repulsive, and the act is often punishable by death.

Some primitive tribes, however, think that by devouring the flesh of fallen foes, they can gain the strength of their spirit. The Eaters of Flesh take this a step further - they conduct rituals to draw power from the flesh of the living and the dead, gaining strength from their horrid acts. They undergo a slow transformation into undead ghoul-like creatures of great power that subsist solely on flesh. These ghoul lords, as they are called, rank among the most powerful of the undead.

Any spellcaster with the will to do so can become an Eater of Flesh, but very few actually do; even the most savage druids will hunt down any Eaters they find. The most vile evil paladins sometimes follow this path, as do clerics, sorcerers, and wizards.

Hit Die: d6.

Requirements

To qualify to become an Eater of Flesh (EoF), the character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Alignment: Any evil

Spellcasting: Ability to cast 4th level spells.

Special: Must have defeated a ghoul or ghast in melee combat and eaten its brain.

Restrictions: The Eater of Flesh must devour at least 4 pounds of raw meat (or 2 for a Small character) per week or lose all class abilities (except for those that change the physical form) and take 1 point of Con damage per day until he has consumed twice the normal amount.

He cannot take levels in another class until he has reached 10th level in this class and undergone the transformation into a ghoul lord – once the process has begun, it cannot be stopped except by atonement or divine intervention.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Eater of Flesh.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Eaters of Flesh gain no new weapon or armor proficiencies.

Devour the Flesh (Su): Eaters of Flesh can perform an unholy ritual in order to gain more than sustenance from others' flesh. The target of such a ritual must have been dead less than 10 minutes (the cause of death is irrelevant, but there must be a body); the ritual itself takes 1 minute and requires the Eater's concentration - if it is interrupted, he must start over (if the 10 minutes have passed, he cannot feed off that body).

The ritual draws upon the victim's soul energy, which is what the Eater of Flesh actually feeds on (the flesh itself is merely a conduit). There are several specific body parts the Eater can devour, each of which grants a different benefit; an Eater of Flesh can feed on only one part from a given body, and only one Eater can devour a given body part, though any number of Eaters can devour parts from the same body. The benefits last for 24 hours or until replaced by devouring flesh from another body. If the Eater dies and is raised, he also loses any benefits gained.

The body parts an Eater of Flesh can devour (and the benefits he gains) are as follows:

Brain: The Eater can choose up to three spells or spell-like abilities the victim knew or had prepared at the time of death. He can cast those spells (provided he is high enough level) as spell-like abilities, three times each.

Eyes: The Eater gains a +4 bonus to Perception checks to see things, and he gains any sight-based abilities the victim had (low-light or darkvision, the ability to see invisible creatures, etc.). The creature must have fully-formed eyes, but can be blind.

Flesh: The Eater gains 2 hit points per HD the victim had (racial HD only). Any hit points in excess of his maximum are temporary hit points, but they remain for 24 hours or until ablated through the character taking damage.

Heart: The Eater gains a +4 bonus to Fort saves and Con checks.

Liver: The Eater gains a +4 resistance bonus to saves to resist poisons or diseases.

Muscles, arms: The Eater gains a burst of strength, which gives him a +2 to melee damage.

Muscles, legs: The Eater becomes faster; he gains a +10 foot bonus to base speed, and a +2 bonus to all attack rolls.

Tongue: The Eater can fluently speak any language the victim knew.

Claws of the Ghoul (Ex): 24 hours after gaining 2nd level in this class, the Eater's nails grow into claws. He can make armed claw attacks (1d3 for Small, 1d4 for Medium, 1d6 for Large).

Spells Per Day: At the indicated levels, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic feats, etc.), except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If the character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming an Eater of Flesh, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Disease (Ex): The Eater's claws and teeth are coated with filth from digging through bodies both living and dead, and eating flesh from the same. A living being struck by his claws or teeth must make a DC 15 Fort save or become infected with filth fever.

Dark Mind (Ex): An Eater of Flesh' mind becomes twisted by the ongoing transformation process and the constant infusion of negative energy, granting him some degree of immunity from effects that would affect other living beings; he gains a +4 bonus to saves vs. mind-affecting effects.

Create Ghoul (Su): Once per week, during the hours of night only, an Eater of Flesh can create a ghoul from a body that has been dead less than a week. This requires 10 minutes, and is otherwise identical to the spell create undead. Any ghouls so created are under his control and count against his maximum number of undead.

Devour the Spirit (Su): The rituals the Eater of Flesh performs to devour a victim's flesh have more power; in addition to the benefits listed above, he gains the following:

Brain: +2 bonus to Intelligence. He cannot gain this benefit by devouring the brain of a mindless creature.

Eyes: +2 bonus to Wisdom.

Flesh: 3 hit points per Hit Die of the victim (this replaces the previous benefit).

Heart: +2 bonus to Constitution. He cannot gain this benefit from devouring the heart of an undead being.

Liver: +6 bonus to saves vs. poisons and disease (this replaces the previous benefit).

Muscles, arms: +2 bonus to Strength.

Muscles, legs: +2 bonus to Dexterity.

Tongue: +2 bonus to Charisma.

He can also devour the flesh of a being that has been dead up to an hour.

Keen Senses (Ex): The Eater of Flesh's sense of smell is vastly improved – he gains a +6 bonus to Survival checks to track creatures by scent, and can sense if a body is freshly dead (within 1 hour). Additionally, his eyes turn into black orbs without pupils, and he gains darkvision.

Create Ghast (Su): Once per week, during the hours of night only, an Eater of Flesh can create a ghast from a body that has been dead less than a week. This requires 10 minutes, and is otherwise identical to the spell create undead. Any ghasts so created are under his control and count against his maximum number of undead.

Unholy Constitution (Ex): 24 hours after gaining 8th level, the Eater of Flesh's skin gains a grayish cast. He becomes partially immune to both negative and positive energy – negative energy effects deal only half damage and he gains a +4 resistance bonus to saves vs. ability/energy damage and drain, but healing spells are only half as effective. He also gains immunity to normal (not supernatural) diseases.

Ghoul Affinity (Ex): Ghouls and ghasts view the Eater of Flesh as one of their own – they will not attack him unless attacked first, and will generally ignore him otherwise (ghoul lords, however, are free to act as they will). He is immune to ghoul paralysis and ghast stench.

Lord of the Dead (Ex): If the Eater of Flesh dies any time after reaching 10th level, he undergoes the final transformation and rises 24 hours later as a full ghoul lord. Many either kill themselves or have a trusted associate do it for them, to expedite the process.

Devour the Soul (Su): At 10th level, the Eater of Flesh's rituals have great power. He can feed on a still-living being (though it must be at -1 or fewer hit points), and he can devour part of its life force, killing it in the process. In addition to gaining the benefits listed above, devouring any body part also drains 1 Hit Die from the victim, which cannot be restored by any means; the Eater permanently gains 2 hit points. The victim can make a Fort save (DC 10 + Eater's class level + Eater's Con modifier) to avoid losing the Hit Die. Creatures with 1 or fewer Hit Dice who fall victim to this ability are permanently slain; otherwise, they can be raised normally.
