Meistersingers are bards who have eschewed the use of instruments, instead developing their voices far beyond the level of normal performers. They have ranges that would make most opera singers swoon with envy, and can use them to great effect. They have learned how to infuse their very words with power - some of the most powerful Meistersingers can captivate, command, or even kill with just the sound of their voice, without casting any spells at all.

All Meistersingers are bards, to some degree; some also take levels in sorcerer or wizard (those of the fey bloodline, or specialist Enchanters, are common) in order to better combine their voices with magical power.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Meistersinger. Unless otherwise noted all saves vs. the Meistersinger's song abilities are DC 10 + 1/2 class level + Cha modifier.

Bardic Ability (Ex): A Meistersinger's bard levels stack with her class levels for purposes of determining duration, effect, and save DCs (but not uses per day) of any bardic music abilities or class abilities.

Voice of Captivation (Su): A Meistersinger can captivate an audience with her voice, much like the bardic fascinate song. In order to use this ability, she and her intended target(s) must be able to see and hear each other, and must be within 90 feet. She can speak or sing, as she chooses; after a full round, those in the audience must make a Will save or fall under her spell. If there are distractions nearby (like a loud battle), the targets get a +4 bonus to the save; likewise, if any of them are shaken, damaged, or otherwise disturbed while in the trance, they can make a new Will save to shake the effects off, but loud noises are not sufficient to break them free.

Creatures under the Meistersinger's influence are effectively enthralled, as the spell; they sit quietly, watching and listening to her, and have an attitude of Friendly toward her, until she stops singing and for 1d6 rounds afterward while they discuss the performance. Any mind-affecting spells or effects she uses against them before the effect wears off gain a +4 bonus to the save DC to resist.

Subharmonics (Su): The Meistersinger can pitch her voice below the range of human hearing, achieving various effects that are not otherwise possible. She can use subharmonics once per day per class level. As with bardic music, the Meistersinger can fight while using this ability, but cannot cast spells or activate magic items by either spell completion or command word. If the song forces any targets to make a Will save, the Meistersinger can move at only half speed. Despite the fact that the singing can’t normally be heard, it is still negated by spells that block sound – mute, silence, sound barrier, etc. All of these abilities, except for chord of concealment, are supernatural, sonic, mind-affecting effects.

By singing in this manner, she can accomplish a number of effects:

Chord of Concealment: A Meistersinger who makes a DC 36 Perform check can hum a chord that bends light and sound around her - she is, in effect, invisible. Spells and effects that enable creatures to see invisible objects and people will not detect her, however, since this effect is not true invisibility. The Meistersinger cannot make any loud noises (anything louder than normal speech), or touch anyone, or the effect is broken; any action that otherwise would end an invisibility spell also ends this effect.

Creatures nearby that could normally sense a Meistersinger's presence (through sight, scent, or sound) must make a Will save to pierce the cloak, and even then they might need to make Perception checks, based on circumstances (e.g., if the Meistersinger is actively hiding as well). A creature in the sphere of a silence spell, or on the far side of a sound barrier, must still make the Will save to perceive the Meistersinger - the sound waves are affecting her only. A silence spell cast on her, however, will negate the effect.

She can maintain this tune for up to 5 rounds per class level.

For every 5 points by which the Meistersinger exceeds DC 36, the DC increases by +1.

Harmony of Dreams: A Meistersinger who makes a DC 24 Perform check can hum a tune that will put all creatures within 30 feet of her to sleep, as the spell. All creatures affected must make a Will save or fall asleep for as long as the Meistersinger sings (or they remain within 30 feet of her, if she moves away while singing), and for 2d4 rounds thereafter. They cannot awaken on their own, but they can be roused by slapping, dousing in water, or inflicting damage. Creatures that are immune to sleep spells are also immune to this effect.

For every 5 points by which the Meistersinger exceeds DC 24, the DC increases by +1.

Soothing Tones: A Meistersinger who makes a DC 28 Perform check can calm agitated, angry, or otherwise upset beings (creatures and people) through the power of her song, as the spell calm emotions (it even affects raging barbarians). She must sing for a full round, and the creatures to be affected must be able to hear her. This ability affects all creatures within 30 feet who can hear her singing; all creatures affected gain a Will save. The effect lasts for as long as she sings, and for 1d4 rounds afterward.

For every 5 points by which the Meistersinger exceeds DC 28, the DC increases by +1.

Whisper of Unease: A Meistersinger who makes a DC 32 Perform check can afflict all within a 30-foot of her with a sense of unease; they suffer a -2 morale penalty to attack rolls, and saves against scare, fear, and similar mind-affecting spells. All creatures in the area can make a Will save each round to avoid the effect; those who fail any save are affected until they leave the area of effect or can no longer hear the Meistersinger, and for 1d4 rounds afterward.

For every 5 points by which the Meistersinger exceeds DC 32, the DC increases by +1.

Amplify Voice (Ex): A Meistersinger can pitch her voice such that she can be heard farther, even over loud noises that would otherwise drown her out. The range for any bardic music abilities is doubled, but the Perform DC is also increased by +4.

Voice of Terror (Su): A Meistersinger can infuse her words (whether speaking or singing) with power, making those within 40 feet who hear her shaken (-2 to attack rolls, saves, and skill and ability checks) for 1d6 rounds, +1 round per class level unless they make a Will save. At 7th level, those failing the save are frightened; at 10th level, they become panicked. Voice of terror is usable once per day per class level.

This is a sonic, mind-affecting ability.

Whisper of Song (Su): A Meistersinger can sing so softly that others cannot hear her (Perception check DC 40), but she can still affect others with her singing. The Meistersinger cannot use a sonic shriek or language-dependent effects in conjunction with this ability, but can use all other bardic and class abilities. Using this ability increases the Perform DC for all bardic music by +4.

Break the Silence (Su): A Meistersinger can dispel a mute spell, sphere of silence, or other barrier designed to negate or prevent sound transmission. In the case of spells that prevent sound, like mute and silence, she must either be affected by the spell or be within the area of influence; she summons her energy and lets it out as a loud scream as a standard action. She must then make an opposed caster level check (using her combined bard and Meistersinger levels) as if she were trying to dispel the effect; if successful, the spell collapses.

Voice of Command (Su): A Meistersinger can utter a greater command, as the spell, just by infusing her spoken words with power. This is a standard action; if the target hears the command and fails a Will save, it is bound to comply, to the best of its ability.

At 10th level, the compulsion is so strong that the target is dominated, as the spell dominate monster. It will attempt to comply with the order and intent of the command, resisting any attempts to stop it by the most expedient means necessary; if the threat is removed, it will immediately go back to performing the task until complete, or until 10 minutes per class level have passed.

Voice of command is usable three times per day. It is a sonic, mind-affecting, language-dependent ability.

Negate Sonics (Su): The Meistersinger's singing ability is such that she can totally negate sonic attacks within 30 feet of her. This ability is identical to countersong, but cannot be used at the same time; instead, she produces a counterpoint that negates the effect. It otherwise works the same as countersong.

Song of Destruction (Su): As a standard action, a Meistersinger can emit an ear-piercing shriek so loud that it deafens those within a 20-foot cone for 2d4 rounds and inflicts 5d4 points of sonic damage. Those in the area of effect can make a Reflex save for half damage, and a Fort save to avoid being deafened for 2d4 rounds. Fragile, crystalline, or glass items or creatures take 5d6 damage unless they make a Fort save. This ability can be used three times per day, but no more often than once per minute, or the Meistersinger damages her vocal chords and is rendered mute for 24 hours (no save).

Voice of Power (Su): At 10th level, the Meistersinger can utter a power word (blind, stun, kill) of her choice once each per day, once per round as a free action.
