Reality Shifter

A Reality Shifter is someone who has learned to see between the interstices of time and space and how to grasp the fabric of the universe and bend it to his will. Reality Shifters can move through time and space almost at will, appearing in one place one minute, then vanishing and reappearing somewhere else almost instantly. Higher level Shifters can even control time and space itself in a limited area.

Reality Shifters fill a variety of roles – adventurer, mercenary, performer, thief, assassin. Few places are barred to an experienced Shifter, making them exceptionally dangerous assassins.

Most Reality Shifters have levels in rogue or monk and sorcerer and wizard, and many have levels in fighter, Assassin, and/or ranger as well.

(Note: While Project Phoenix doesn't have psionics rules, this class can be used with psionic PCs - hence the mention of psionics below.)

Hit Die: d6.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Reality Shifter.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Reality Shifters gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Probability Sight (Su): Reality Shifters are adept at viewing the various timelines and choosing between them. At 1st level, a Shifter can predict the outcome of a random event – a die roll, or the flip of a coin – by making a DC 15 Wisdom check. This is modified by the number of possibilities involved – for instance, a normal die has six sides, and a 16% chance of any given side coming up; the DC is thus increased by 5 (not 6, because one of the possibilities will be the right one, and any guess has a 1 in 6 chance of being right).

By viewing lines of probability, the Shifter also gains an insight bonus to attack rolls, Armor Class, and Reflex saves equal to half his class level.

Spells Per Day: At the indicated levels, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic feats, etc.), except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If the character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Reality Shifter, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

If the character is a psion or other class with psionic powers, he can add one manifestor level instead of a caster level to an existing class, as above.

Dimensional Pocket (Su): Three times per day as a standard action, a Reality Shifter can step into a fold in space. This is a small space, about 5 feet square, totally separate from the space-time continuum and immune to detection by any means short of divine. He can remain here for up to 10 minutes per class level; time does not pass in the pocket, so he does not gow hungry or thirsty. He cannot move while in the pocket, but he can cast or prepare spells, use magic items, etc. If he is still in the pocket when the time runs out, he is ejected back to the place from which he entered it, unharmed.

Time Duplicates (Su): Once per day per three class levels, as a standard action, the Reality Shifter can temporarily merge the lines of probability into the current timeline, bringing one duplicate of himself per class level into this reality. These duplicates are not wholly physical, as they represent realities that might have been; in effect, the Shifter is surrounded by a number of mirror images, but the images have 20% of his hit points. They last for one round per class level.

Sneak Attack (Ex): This is exactly the same as the rogue ability of the same name. The extra damage dealt increases by +1d6 every three levels (3rd, 6th, and 9th). If a Reality Shifter gets a sneak attack bonus from another source, the bonuses on damage stack.

Dimension Slide (Su): Three times per day as a standard action, a Reality Shifter can travel along the lines between space, moving as if he were using a dimension door. The caster level for this effect is his manifestor or spellcaster level, whichever is higher. Unlike dimension door, the Shifter does not suffer the round of disorientation.

Manipulate Time (Su): Three times per day, as a standard action, the Reality Shifter can alter the flow of time within an area of 5 feet per class level – speed it up (effectively casting haste on everyone around him), slow it down (slow on everyone), or even stopping it completely. In all cases, the Shifter is immune to his own manipulations; there is no save to avoid the effect otherwise, though those protected from time manipulation are immune to this ability. This effect lasts for 1 round per class level, though anyone who leaves the area of effect is immediately free of it, and anyone who enters is subject to its effects.

Dimension Jump (Su): This ability is identical to Dimension Slide (and supercedes it), except that the Reality Shifter can travel even further along the lines, in effect teleporting to a desired location he has seen or can picture. Unlike the teleport spell, there is no chance of landing off-base.

Ageless (Ex): At 7th level, a Reality Shifter becomes immune to effects of time – he no longer ages and cannot be affected by aging spells or effects, including those that grant youth.

Dimensional Rift (Su): Three times per day, as a full-round action, a Reality Shifter can open a rift in the space-time continuum to any plane of existence, as if he were casting the teleportation version of the gate spell. The rift lasts for as long as the Shifter concentrates on maintaining it (up to 1 round per class level), then immediately closes.

Mastery of Time (Ex): At 9th level, a Reality Shifter is immune to all spells and effects that manipulate time – haste, slow, time stop, temporal stasis, etc. He can voluntarily lower his resistance to any of these effects if he so chooses, however.

Mastery of Space (Ex): At 10th level, a Reality Shifter has total control over his place in the space-time continuum. He cannot be teleported, banished, plane shifted, etc. by any means short of divine unless he wishes it so; he also does not suffer the usual chances of landing off-target when casting teleportation spells like plane shift or shadow walk.
