Shadowfane

Shadowfanes are spellcasters who have learned to tap the power of Shadow to a greater degree than others of their ilk. They can manipulate raw Shadow, infusing it into their spells, and gain a number of abilities and powers related to Shadow. This greater connection comes at a price, however – long-term contact with Shadow energies changes the body of a living being, leeching away its humanity and replacing it with a cold, emotionless energy.

High-level Shadowfanes are easy to recognize, as they have dusky gray skin, silver-gray eyes, and an aversion to light. Most who reach this level of ability, however, usually wear cloaks when out in public to hide their appearance from those who would persecute them, and to shield them from the light. Among other Shadowfanes or creatures of Shadow, they usually walk freely uncovered, using their appearance as an unspoken reminder to others of their path to power and how far along it they have progressed.

Wizards and sorcerers are the most common Shadowfanes – bards typically go for Jack o' Shadows, but some few choose to take levels in Shadowfane instead.

Class Features

All the following are class features of the Shadowfane.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Shadowfane gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Shadow Mastery (Ex): The Shadowfane adds a +1 competence bonus per two class levels to the DC of all Illusion (shadow) spells he casts, and +1 per two class levels as a resistance bonus on saves against shadow illusions created by others.

Reduced Sleep (Ex): A Shadowfane who sleeps in an area of shadows (illumination no brighter than candle- or starlight) needs only 6 hours of rest, instead of 8, to regain spells, as the shadow energies help to sustain him. At 6th level, he need sleep only 4 hours, and at 10th level, this is reduced to 2 hours. A Shadowfane can still sleep the full 8 hours in a well-lit area and regain all his spells like normal.

Spells Per Day: At the indicated levels, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (improved chance of controlling or rebuking undead, metamagic feats, etc.), except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a Shadowfane, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Blackout (Su): Three times per day, the Shadowfane can extinguish light sources within 30 feet as a standard action. Nonmagical light are automatically snuffed; magical lights must make an opposed caster level check to avoid being dispelled (items that permanently cast light are suppressed for 1d4 rounds). This is an instantaneous effect; lights can be relit normally the next round.

Increase Shadow (Ex): The Shadowfane's illusion (shadow) spells, like shadow conjuration are more realistic than normal, as he infuses them with more shadow energy. At 3rd level, this bonus is 10%; at 6th 15%, and at 9th, 20%. The maximum amount of shadow the Shadowfane can have in any illusion is 90%.

Light Aversion (Ex): A Shadowfane's eyes have become so attuned to the darkness that he is uncomfortable in bright light. Light brighter than a torch incurs a -1 penalty to attack rolls and requires a DC 15 Concentration check to cast spells; sunlight or its equivalent (a daylight spell) incurs a -2 penalty and a DC 20 Concentration check.

Summon Shadow (Su): Once per day, a Shadowfane can summon a shadow. It has the same stats as an undead shadow except for the Strength drain, but is made from pure Shadow essence – it is not undead, can't be turned, and can't create spawn. The summoned shadow remains for one minute for class level.

Darksight (Ex): The Shadowfane gains the ability to see through all forms of darkness, even magical. Shadowfanes who gain this level of power are easy to pick out, as their eyes turn silver.

Cloak of Shadows (Su): While standing in areas of shadow or darkness (at least equal to torchlight), a Shadowfane can take a standard action to gather shadows around himself. This grants a bonus to his Stealth checks equal to his class level. It can be used once per day per point of his Cha bonus, and lasts for one minute. Light equal to sunlight or a daylight spell instantly banishes the shadows and negates the Stealth bonus.

Shadowhealth (Su): The Shadowfane heals 1 point of damage per three class levels each minute that he hides in the shadows and remains still, absorbing shadowstuff from the darkness around him to heal his wounds. He can use this ability in conjunction with the shadow blend ability; if the shadows are dispelled any time during a given minute, or if he moves out of them, he does not gain any healing for that minute. While healing, he must remain in one spot, and he can't use spells, psionic powers, or abilities that are not passive in nature (i.e., spells and abilities that are already in effect and/or require little or no concentration to use). Damage from positive energy or light-based spells and effects cannot be healed in this manner, however.

A Shadowfane who gains this level of power undergoes further changes; his skin turns a dusky gray, and his hair turns black. Both changes take place over the course of 24 hours.

Shadow Form (Su): Once per day, for 1 minute per class level, a Shadowfane can become incorporeal. He can turn corporeal at any time, but if he does so before the time limit is up, he can't turn back until the next day. Turning incorporeal or becoming solid is a full-round action.

One with the Shadows (Su): If a Shadowfane stands in an area of shadow and remains still, he is considered to be invisible, and cannot be detected by spells or powers designed to discern a creature's location – this works against all spells short of wish or miracle, or divine abilities.
