Encounters and XP

To find the EL for a given encounter, simply take the opponent's ECL and look it up on Table 1.

If the party faces multiple opponents, total all their ECLs together to determine the EL. Exception: Creatures whose ECLs are 18 or more lower than the highest creature in the group don't count toward the total. For example: A balor (ECL 27) and two quasits (ECL 4) face the party. Since the quasits' ECLs are 23 less than the balor's, they don't count toward the encounter level - they're simply not powerful enough to pose a threat.

The amount of XP awarded depends on the difference between the opponent's ECL and average party ECL. Refer to the table below to determine the base XP for a given encounter, then multiply the result for each PC by that PC's ECL.

For example: A party of five 15th-level PCs (average ECL 15) face off vs. two vrocks (ECL 14). The EL for this encounter is 17 (19 for ECL 28, -2 for there being two opponents). If the party wins, each member gets 600 XP times his ECL (or 9,000 XP each).
