Black oaks form in forests that are subjected to large amounts of necromantic magic, or repeated castings in the same area over time. They are often oak trees, but can be any type of large deciduous tree. Some are corrupted treants; these are especially dangerous, as they retain their abilities - unlike normal black oaks, which are formed from nonsentient trees. They live to corrupt nature and destroy living creatures, and often aid evil druids to that end. Unlike normal plants, black oaks obtain only a small part of their sustenance from light, air, and water - they also require the blood and flesh of living creatures. These wily plant-creatures are adept at changing their form to appear as a normal oak tree so as to lure unsuspecting prey near them. To this end, they also create inviting crevices in their trunks or broad, inviting branches, or move the roots to make a comfortable resting place.

Treants can spot a black oak instantly, of course, but even a druid must make a successful Survival or Knowledge (Nature) check (DC 20) to recognize a black oak for what it is. Those who make a successful Perception check against a hiding black oak's Stealth check merely know that the tree is not what it seems, and will likely think it a normal treant unless they make a check as noted above.


If pressed into combat, black oaks can attack with two large branches, but they prefer to lie in wait until their prey is comfortable and unsuspecting, then strike without warning, cramming a creature into the orifice in its trunk, where the hapless victim is digested.

Energy Drain (Su): Each round a swallowed creature remains in contact with the black oak's digestive acid, it must make a Fort save (DC 17) or be drained one level. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Fire Vulnerability (Ex): Black oaks take double damage from fire attacks unless the attack allows a save, in which case the black oak takes double damage on failed save or no damage on a success.

Immunities (Ex): Black oaks are immune to cold, electricity, and gasses of all types.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, the black oak must hit with a slam attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action. If it gets a hold, it can transfer a victim to its maw in the next round.

Swallow Whole (Ex): A black oak can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of a smaller size than itself by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d4+4 points of acid damage per round, and must make a Fort save against the level drain (see above). A successful grapple check allows a swallowed creature to climb out of the acid and return to the maw, where another grapple check is needed to get free. Alternatively, a swallowed creature can try to cut its way out with a light slashing weapon, Dealing at least 20 points of damage to the inside of the tree (AC 18) this way creates an opening large enough to escape. Once a single swallowed creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; thus, another swallowed creature must cut its own way out. The black oak can hold up to two Large, 4 Medium, or 16 Small or smaller creatures.

Tremorsense (Ex): A black oak can sense the presence of creatures in a 30-foot radius through a network of fine rootlets in the ground.

Turning Immunity (Ex): The black oak is immune to rebuke, turn or control attempts (to include the control undead spell).

Skills: Black oaks have a +16 racial bonus to Stealth checks to hide in forest settings.
