Gate Guardian

Gatekeepers are constructs specially made to guard doors, gates, or other large portals. Unlike other constructs, however, they are the door, gate, or other portal. The gatekeeper folds itself into the form of the gate and attaches itself to the frame; it acts as a normal gate until conditions are triggered that require it to take action, whereupon it unfolds itself (taking 2-3 rounds), then attacks. Gatekeepers can be fairly obvious to spot, or can be well-hidden, depending on the crafter's skill and whim (see below for more details). They are most often crafted from stone, though metal, bone, and even wood golems have been reported, though they all have the same immunities and DR.

Gatekeepers are typically given a specific set of instructions under which to act; usually, they attack anyone who attempts to bypass the gate they guard (by magical means, or by going around the portal), tries to pick the lock (if there is one), or damages the door or the construct itself in any way. The gatekeeper never moves further than 10 feet from the door it guards and always moves to attack anyone who touches the door or attempts to pass through the open doorway over other targets. Once all targets have retreated beyond 10 feet and no one has attacked for three full rounds or attempted to get around it, it returns to its place.

Two statblocks are presented below for the most common varieties: a Medium version (the lesser gatekeeper, or gate guardian), which is actually part of the door or gate, appearing as a bas relief carving or a decoration of some kind, and a Huge version (the gatekeeper), which forms the entire portal as noted above. A gate guardian requires a DC 20 Perception or Knowledge (architecture) check to see; a gatekeeper requires a DC 17 check. Dwarves gain a +2 racial bonus to notice gatekeepers of either type that are made of stone.

The gatekeepers presented here are made from iron and stone, respectively.

Lesser gatekeepers, or gate guardians, are a smaller form inset into a door or gate, becoming part of it. They can take many forms, as normal golems, though they are always humanoid in appearance. Most are unarmed (and use the slam attack listed above); some few have weapons – swords, axes, and maces are most common – in which case it would use that weapon. Note that the weapon is crafted as part of the golem and cannot be disarmed/removed.

A gate guardian is 6-7 feet tall and weighs 500-1,000 pounds, depending on the material used.

Combat

Gate guardians use fists or weapons in melee, as appropriate. They never pursue more than 10 feet from the portal they guard, and instantly know if someone comes within 5 feet of it, turning to attack that person over all others.

Repair (Ex): A lesser gatekeeper in gate form repairs 3 hit points of damage per hour.

Construction

A lesser gatekeeper's body is sculpted from 500-1,000 pounds of material and costs 5,000 gp. Assembling a lesser gatekeeper requires a DC 15 Craft check – sculpting or stonemasonry for stone, armorsmithing or weaponsmithing for iron, or carpentry for wood.

CL 10th; geas/quest, repair object, caster must be at least 10th level; Price 55,000 gp.

Gatekeepers form an entire gate, except for a frame. When a gatekeeper leaves its frame, a plane of invisible energy fills the frame in its place; it knows instantly if any living or undead being crosses the plane and will immediately turn to pursue them. Unlike gate guardians, gatekeepers are rarely armed.

Combat

Gatekeepers use fists or weapons in melee, as appropriate. They never pursue more than 10 feet from the portal they guard, and instantly know if someone comes within 5 feet of it, turning to attack that person over all others.

Repair (Ex): A gatekeeper in gate form repairs 3 hit points of damage per hour.

Construction

A greater gatekeeper's body is sculpted from 10,000 pounds of material and costs 20,000 gp. Assembling a lesser gatekeeper requires a DC 15 Craft check – sculpting or stonemasonry for stone, armorsmithing or weaponsmithing for iron, or carpentry for wood.
