Umbral Creature

Umbral creatures are those whose bodies are partially infused with shadow essence. They have a dusky, grayish tinge to their skin, and their eyes fade to a dull silvery-gray color. Such creature are commonly found on the Plane of Shadow, though some are created through use of ritual spells. Shadowfanes' familiars can also gain the umbral template.

Creating an Umbral Creature
"Umbral" is an acquired template that can be added to any living corporeal creature except for elementals, oozes, or plants (referred to hereafter as the "base creature").

An umbral creature uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type: Size does not change. Type does not change. The base creature gains the Shadow subtype.

Hit Dice: Hit Die does not change.

Speed: Same as the base creature.

Armor Class: The base creature gains a deflection bonus to Armor Class equal to its Charisma bonus (minimum 1).

Attack: Same as the base creature.

Full Attack: Same as the base creature.

Special Attacks: An umbral creature retains all the special attacks of the base creature.

Special Qualities: An umbral creature retains all the special qualities of the base creature and those listed below.

Damage Reduction (Ex): An umbral creature has DR 5/silver. Its natural weapons are treated as silver for purposes of overcoming damage reduction.

Light Sensitivity (Ex): Umbral creatures are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.

Light Vulnerability (Ex): Umbral creatures suffer a -2 racial penalty on saves vs. light-based spells.

Shadow Blend (Su): In any condition of illumination other than full daylight, an umbral creature can disappear into the shadows, giving it total concealment. Artificial illumination, even a light or continual flame spell, does not negate this ability, but a daylight spell will.

Shadow Jump (Su): An umbral creature can travel between shadows as if by means of a dimension door spell. The limitation is that the magical transport must begin and end in an area with at least some shadow. The creature can jump up to a total of 10 feet per Hit Die each day in this way. This amount can be split among many jumps, but each one, no matter how small, counts as a 10-foot increment.

Shadow Resistance (Ex): Umbral creatures have a +4 racial bonus on saves vs. spells with the Darkness descriptor or Shadow subschool, and take -1 point/die of damage from such spells, if applicable.

Saves: Same as the base creature.

Abilities: Increase from the base creature as follows:** Con +2.

Skills: The umbral creature gains a +4 racial bonus to Stealth checks. Otherwise same as the base creature.

Feats: Same as the base creature.

ECL: Same as the base creature +1.

Advancement: Same as the base creature.

Trip (Ex): A wolf that hits with a bite attack can attempt to trip the opponent (+1 check modifier) as a free action without making a touch attack. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the wolf.

Skills: Wolves have a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent.
