Half Elves

While elves look down on humans as a "lesser race" fit for little better than slave labor, some elves have been known to take human lovers and concubines. The offspring of these unions are always illegitimate, but they occupy a special place in the elven caste system. Since many can pass themselves off as human, they are employed as spies and assassins among the humans, serving their elven lords; others are trained to be ambassadors. Half-elves are rare among human society, due to their mistrust of elves in general, but some are the legitimate offspring of outcast elves or wild elves and humans.

Personality: Used by the elves and mistrusted by the humans, half-elves have a hard time fitting in to either society. Most are loners or turn to a life of crime, becoming freelance rogues or assassins, or joining guilds with a collection of other outcasts. Some half-elves have found a place among the human armies, where respect for one's fighting prowess supercedes considerations due to race.

Physical Description: Half-elves combine the best of both parent races. They are finer-boned in general than their human forebears, but more robust than the elves; they are somewhere in between in height and weight also. Most half-elves have slightly tilted elven eyes, and all have slightly pointed ears (though most tend to hide them under long hair); unlike elves, male half-elves can grow beards and mustaches, and many do so to hide their elven heritage.

Relations: Due to their elven ancestry, half-elves are alternately feared, mistrusted, or outright scorned by those who have poor relations with the elves. Orcs (and, by extension, half-orcs) view half-elves on the whole as second-rate elves, but halflings welcome any who pursue spiritualism and enlightenment, regardless of race. Most half-elves can find a home among the wild elf tribes, if they wish to live in the tropical jungles the wild elves call home.

Alignment: Half-elves tend toward the chaotic end of the spectrum – they learn to rely on themselves and a few close friends, not society at large, but like humans, they tend toward neither good nor evil.

Lands: Half-elves either reside in elven lands or travel a lot, calling no place home for long.

Religion: Half-elves typically worship the gods of luck, thieves, or adventurers.

Languages: Half-elves speak both Elven and Common fluently.

Names: Half-elves typically use elven naming conventions, though some use their own names instead in an attempt to declare their uniqueness from humans and elves.

As with elves, half-elves tend to not have surnames. Those living among the humans or who marry a human often adopt a family name, though.

Adventurers: Most half-elves are adventurers simply because they don't fit in anywhere else. They wander the world looking for a place to call home, or seeking fame, fortune, and recognition. Many half-elves are bards, fighters, rangers, or rogues; wizards are uncommon, as are sorcerers (the infusion of human bloodlines gives them a greater change of sorcerous talent); very few half-elves become clerics, druids, or paladins, because all of those require ties to gods or the land. Like elves, half-elves disdain barbarians as near-savages, and while they take well to martial arts, they tend to shy away from the monk's rigid lifestyle.

Racial Abilities

Elven Blood (Ex): For all effects related to race, a half-elf is considered an elf.

Keen Senses (Ex): Half-elves gain a +1 racial bonus to Perception and Search checks. At 5th level, and every five levels thereafter, the bonus increases by +1.

Low-Light Vision (Ex): A half-elf can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.

Resist Enchantments (Ex): Half-elves have a +2 racial bonus to saves against enchantment spells or effects.

Weapon Proficiency: Half-elves receive the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat for one of the following weapons: longbow (and composite longbow), longbow, longsword, rapier, or shortbow (and composite shortbow).

Bonus Feat: At 10th level, and every 10 levels thereafter, a half-elf gains a bonus feat. This can be any feat for which he qualifies, but he must meet the prerequisites for the bonus feat normally.
